Either.

It’s entirely up to you.

Sometimes a subject area really interests me. And I’ll write. 15+ hubs about Roman Emperors, 15+ on Greek Philosophers, 15+ on weight training… I’ll write because it interests me. I’ll do a bit of a search on the simplest of keyword phrases, provided there’s at least some kind of activity in people searching for this information I’ll use the most searched terms as tags. Provided of course they are relevant to my content.

Occasionally I’ll write about something that fascinates me and I don’t care whether there are people searching for it, such as my hubs on the “Multimillion Dollar Home For Sale” and “ASCII Art“. With the first one though I did use a URL that is a fairly popular search phrase. But otherwise it doesn’t matter to me at all how many people visit those hubs, I did it for the love of it (actually, I did the “Multimillion Dollar Home For Sale” one because it was an opportunity that fell in my lap and it was such a unique experience I wanted others to have a taste of what I saw). I could also put my How To Hub hubs in that group, they make me $0 Adsense. In fact I’ve switched off ads on all those hubs.

Then there are times where I’ll do a bit of digging with half a clue and the keyword tool and find out what sort of keywords are pulling in high priced CPCs. I’ll then target a keyword phrase and I’ll do research. I’m not talking keyword research, but content research. I’ll hit the books and write an informative and factual piece. You won’t see those in my list of hubs on this account, I have them scattered around over several accounts. Each catering to its own niche.

I hardly ever, in fact 90% of the time I don’t ‘promote’ these hubs. No backlinks, no nothing. I let them get found by the Search Engines on their own merits. It’s slow to start but when they do get found by real humans, they’ll find good solid information. While not as exhaustive as my last two hubs (on Vitamins and Minerals) they’re about 700 or so words in length.

I must be doing something right if I’m using HubScore as an indication of quality, because these hub accounts sit in the high 80s and low 90s and that’s without them having any forum interaction.

So here’s what I suggest:

1) first and foremost, aim to write good, original and useful content. Even before you claim a hub URL. Even before I’ve really started writing, or I’ve just written the introduction (the first text capsule) I’ll write sub-headings for each part of my hub. There will be a whole bunch of questions that I’ll want answered if I were finding out this information myself, in fact I am finding out this information myself, so these headings/questions are like guideposts to me, I have to find the answers to them.

2) do some keyword research, before and during the writing process. I’m often thinking at 110%. Sometimes I’m writing and I see that something I’ve mentioned could be explained further, but to do so in that article will distract from its primary focus. So I’ll save another text document and jot down some notes. I’ll look into it later. While I’m doing this keyword research I’ll be finding out how many people are searching not just the keyword of my article, but the questions/headings. Sometimes I’ll be spot on and have a great results, other times I’ll discover by rewording it differently I’ll go from “Not Enough Data” to at least a few thousand potential searches a month.

3) I might be 50% of the way through writing my hub when I go grab the URL. I like to keep it as short as possible and if not then I like to keep it as simple as possible.

4) I’ll fill the text capsules with my proofed and spell checked content. And of course there’s the photos, Amazon and Ebay capsules and whatnot, but that’s a whole other discussion. Now’s a good time to read it all again once saved in the hub but before its published.

5) I’ll use a combination of the most searched terms and the highest average CPC as the tags.

6) Publish! And then off to satisfy my next whim or whatever tickles my fancy.

Don’t try and dominate keywords that have very little traffic. Or an average CPC of US$0.05. Of course I could also warn against going to the other extreme, but so what if there’s strong competition, have a go at punching above your weight class. Maybe not every time. Mix it up.

The thing I find most fantastic about this magical milestone is that they could have accomplished it quite a while ago, but the stringent quality standards they have in place sees low quality, overly promotional and straight spam hubs filtered, flagged and bumped to unpublish status.
Here are the current up to the minute (or hour, I’m not sure exactly how often the stats are refreshed) HubPages Statistics:

Published Hubs: 500,187
Forum Posts: 374,835
Total Users: 751,402
Published Users: 97,918
Hubs with 1,000+ hub views in the last month: 5,548
Hubs with 100+ hub views in the last month: 45,905
Hubs with 10+ hub views in the last month: 191,066

Which, by the time you have read this blog post, would no doubt have changed. So check out the HubPages Statistics page for the most up to date information.

It’s time to hit the Internet!

If all goes to plan I can be offline for the first 20 days of the challenge because even though all my writing takes place on the computer, it doesn’t require me to be connected to the net. And all my research takes place offline too.

Now there’s a few things I need to do.

1) Claim URLs

2) Grab images.

3) Copy and paste my content.

4) Maybe grab a few relevant links of other websites and webpages. As well as Amazon products.

5) Hit publish.

I could follow these steps by either doing the lot in a batch or I can follow all five steps per individual hub, one at a time. I think I might do the latter. Only because I want to publish each of these hubs as quickly as possible, and while it’s still going to be overwhelming, any fans that are subscribed will have a better chance of reading a few of them. Rather than get slammed with 30 hubs all at once.

Lets look at these steps closer…

1) Claim your URLs: I prefer short and sweet URLs. If it’s two or more words I’ve been leaning more towards hyphens than underscores and runtogetherwords. I’ll explain this more later in a dedicated blog post.

2) Find appropriate images, just one or two for each hub. You can use photos you’ve taken, or you have permission to use, or you can sign up at a free stock photography site such as: MorgueFile, Free Range Stock and stock.xchng. Be sure to follow the instructions for each of those sites. You will probably have to resize the images so they’re smaller in file size. It’s a good idea because uploading an optimized image which can be 75kb in size after editing is a lot quicker than uploading a 2meg file. You might also want to consider Youtube. Are there videos which illustrate the point you’re making? Is there a video that will enhance your visitors experience?

3) Start copying and pasting your content into the hubs. And upload your photos.

4) Relevant links. Do a search and find other top quality sites that would be of benefit to your visitor. Put yourself in your readers shoes. Do a search at Amazon to find the best targeted product that will complement your subject matter.

5) Two words: Hit publish.

My 30 day challenge only actually requires me to be online for 10 of the 30 days. So if you’re ever going to be offline for an extended amount of time, but you still have access to a computer, you could do all the ground work to publish a big batch of hubs, whether or not you’re doing the 30 Day Hub Challenge.

I do all this in notepad. I layout all my content and arrange it as if it’s already in the hub. Rather than explain it in detail I’ll paste an example of it here…

SUMMARY

Rene Descartes is generally considered the ‘father of modern philosophy’. He was a French philosopher, born at La Have, Touraine, and educated at the Jesuit school of La Fleche.

The first book published by Descartes was Discourse on Method. This and subsequent works established his reputation throughout Europe.

In 1650 he went to the court of Sweden at the invitation of Queen Christina, but he was unused to the cold northern climate and soon caught a chill that resulted in his death within a few months of arriving. In 1666 his body was removed to Paris, and in 1819 transferred to St Germain-des-Pres.

Rene Descartes, French philosopher, logician, scientist, and mathematician. Born La Haye (near Tours), in France on 31 March 1596, the son of a minor nobleman.

He was educated at a Jesuit college at La Fleche, where he proved to be a good student, excelling at languages, mathematics and astronomy, despite his growing dissatisfaction with the then current methods of scholasticism, which was based on a comparison of the views of recognized authorities. He then studied law at the University of Poitiers.

Descartes is often regarded as the father of modern philosophy. Even in his schooldays he found it impossible to accept scholastic tradition and theological dogma as knowledge, and his first step towards evolving a philosophic system was to discard all books. His system of thought, Cartesianism, was an attempt to establish knowledge on a foundation of absolute certainty. His theories of knowledge and of the relation between mind and matter influenced later philosophers such as Locke, Spinoza, and Leibniz.

In 1617 Descartes began a military career, serving mainly in Holland and Bohemia in the army of Prince Maurice of Orange. While in the army, he began to forumlate the basis of his philosophy.

In 1619 he entered the service of Bavaria, and while in winter quarters at Neuberg on the Danube found time for the reflections which afterwards resulted in the Discours de la methode.

In 1621, left the army. After travelling on the Continent and living in Paris (1625) for a time, in seclusion, studying and writing. He moved to the Netherlands in 1629 and lived there until 1649.

Descartes used new methods of investigating nature which marked a sharp break with medieval thought. He tried to reduce all of nature to a system of mathematical principles. His invention of analytic geometry contributed greatly to the efforts of 17th-century scientists, who saw nature as a gigantic machine and formulated universal laws to explain its workings. Descartes however, developed a system of physics that was unheard of for its time, but was less revolutionary than that of his contemporary, Isaac Newton.

The cardinal point in the philosophy of Descartes is the essential difference between spirit and matter, between thinking and extending substances, into one of which classes all things fall, and which can in no way exert any influence upon each other or partake of each other’s attributes.
TEXT CAPSULE

In 1637 he published the Discours de la Methode (Discourse on Method), in which he traces his mental development from his earliest years to the point at which he refused to believe anything unless it was supported by incontrovertible and absolute proof. Starting with doubt as the only sure test, he applied it to all that had, up to that point, passed as knowledge, and the only proposition which stood the test seemed the fact of his own existence. He expressed the relation between consciousness and existence in his now famous words: Cogito ergo sum (I think therefore I am).

From this he next concluded that ‘whatever is clearly and distinctly thought must be true’. From that he arrived at the idea of the existence of a Perfect Being, because from the intuition of our own imperfection we evolve the idea of perfection, and if the idea of perfection is certain, then perfection must exist.

Since imperfect Man could not have originated such a notion, the imperfect being incapable of conceiving the perfect. This is regarded as an ontological argument, and Descartes was responsible for its re-introduction into modern philosophy.

Another fundamental notion introduced by Descartes is the duality of spirit and nature, the two being mutually exclusive and capable of being united only through the intervention of God. This led to the doctrine of occasionalism, which asserted that body and mind do not influence one another, God being the cause of their apparent connection.
TEXT CAPSULE

The principles of the Discours de la methode are dealt with more fully in Meditationes de Prima Philosophia, 1641, and Principia Philosophiae, 1644. From philosophy he applied his principles to physics, and his celebrated theory of vortices, explaining the motions of the heavenly bodies, was only superseded by Newton’s theory of gravitation. It was in mathematics that Descartes achieved the most lasting results; he first recognised the real meaning of the negative roots of equations and founded analytical geometry, the application of algebra to geometry.

Descartes’ achievements in mathematics were also considerable. He demonstrated the usefulness of algebra in analytical geometry, recognized the meaning of the negative roots of equations and explained the law of sines. His theory of vortices in astronomy prevailed until the time of Sir Isaac Newton, and in his Meteores (1637), he explained for the first time the formation of the rainbow. Descartes’ contributions to philosophy, mathematics and astronomy were far reaching in their effects, and he is appropriately called ‘the father of modern philosophy’.

In 1649, he accepted the invitation of Queen Christina of Sweden to instruct her in philosophy, but the northern climate proved too severe, and he died in Stockholm Sweden, Feb. 11, in 1650. His body now lies in the church of St Germain-des-Pres in Paris.

To explain a few things…

I put those lines of dashes as visual separators in my text document.

Tags: You could rely on a keyword search tool, obvious search phrases and also throw in a few misspellings if they’re difficult words or names or of common typos.

Summary: Putting in a custom summary is better than relying on it being pulled from your first text capsule. You can have up to 500 characters.

It may take me a little more than 10 days to do the editing, it will depend on how long the word count is for each and how quick I am at editing. If it takes a day or two longer that will be fine, as Stage III is less taxing on the brain so I might not need the whole ten days for the sprint to the finish line.

Tomorrow (or the day after) I’ll conclude with Part 3 of this blog series.

You could approach the 30 Hubs in 30 Days Hub Challenge by doing one hub a day. If you can find the time to do so, it can work for you. But it’s easy to miss a day, or even two, due to whatever it is that life throws at you. And it’s hard to play catch up. So this method I’m going to outline might suit you if, like me, you’re banking on having some hidden surprises thrown at you.

I split the thirty days into three parts. You can make them equal, you can add or subtract a couple of days here or there, depending on how quickly you can progress. And if you have to miss a day or two, you can easily smooth it over.

Here’s what I’ll be doing in the first third of my 30 days:

Make a list. I pick out some topics that interest me. Do the hubs I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve got a few hub names claimed previously that I haven’t had a chance to do yet, so nows the time to push myself to clear them away.

I’ve already been approved to do a Capstone series, so there’s 15 straight up. Maybe if you’ve got a theme running through your list you could tie them together. I’ll be doing the main Capstone hub AFTER the thirty day challenge. Because that will require a lot of thought and effort. Read my hub on the Capstone Hub Program for more details.
I’ll be researching my list of topics. I prefer not to rely on online information. I hit the books or I write from what I know.

I take all this information I’ve gathered and save them into separate text documents. The name of the .txt files will be what I’d like to name my URLs. I’ll find out later if they are indeed available. If they’re not, I’ll figure out something, but that will come later.

At this stage I’m not worrying about editing any of it yet, I’m concentrating on getting ahold of as much information as I can, and getting down the most important bits.

I do keep in mind what standard I’m aiming at? Obviously a Flagship Hub standard is too high. My minimum criteria is that of a Capstone serial hub. 700 words would be better. If it goes for longer than that I should start thinking about splitting the information up. For instance, have I covered too much about the history of the topic? That might be better off being another hub. Or I could put that information aside and publish it later at another site with a backlink to my hub.

Be mindful of just how much information you’re going to cover in your hubs because the longer it is now, the more editing you’ll have to do later. And that’s going to take some time.

I’ll be kicking off my challenge on Friday 24th and I already know that I’ll miss at least two days due to other commitments, quite possibly three days during that first 10 day period. So I’ve got about 7 days to brainstorm my ideas and collect my information.

Once I’ve done that I’m ready for Stage II. More on that soon.

First, another welcome to Startpoint.biz. Wish us luck as we’re about to begin another blogging adventure.

We’re picking up from where we left off at Lensroll where I announced the launch of a new Hub Challenge.

Monday should see the opening of the new sub-forum: The 30 Hubs in 30 Days HubChallenge.

Over the next few days I’ll be outlining a plan of attack. My game plan, of how I’ll approach an assault on making 30 hubs in 30 days.

If you’re not already familiar with HubPages I have written a hub called How HubPages Works which lists all the stuff you need to know about the site. I highly recommend HubPages, I am making money with them. And I’m confident it will increase due to my increased activity by publishing another 30 hubs in the space of one month, just as it did last time I committed myself to making 30 hubs in 30 days.

I’ll be kicking off my hubchallenge on Friday 24th 12:01am (PST). Stay tuned for more details.
